Ana

I recorded Ana (ig: @anac.yoga) at her new studio in Kwun Tong. Over the past year, she has devoted most of her time teaching herself how to play crystal singing bowls and develop her own style. A part-time yoga teacher for many years, she eventually got interested in singing bowls. She used to carry a few of her bowls from one yoga studio to the next for her sessions until her students encouraged her to open her own studio so she could play all her bowls. A knowledge and love of music helped her develop a style that she resonated with. The result is a mature, controlled, intimate knowledge of her instrument and the confidence how she tells her story with sound.

We started in the evening to avoid the louder sounds of the building and traffic. After talking a bit about her and her journey, we recorded 1 session. I love how the swooshing traffic below wafts through the window like distant ocean waves or wind over a rice field. It's just a beautiful recording. To my surprise she chanted in the middle of her session revealing her low and sultry voice perfectly layered within the soundscape she painted. Looking forward to the next recording.
